CigaFree – AI-Powered Quit Smoking Coach

An intelligent mobile app designed to help people quit smoking by addressing the moment cravings occur, rather than simply tracking days since the last cigarette.

Overview

While many quit-smoking apps focus primarily on streak counters, CigaFree takes a behavioural approach. The app helps users understand their smoking patterns, resist cravings in real time, and gradually build smoke-free habits through personalised insights and short distraction challenges.

Developed as part of the AI Labs mobile product portfolio, CigaFree demonstrates how artificial intelligence and behavioural design can be combined to create simple but effective habit-change tools.

The Problem

Quitting smoking remains one of the most difficult habits to break.

Most people attempting to quit experience repeated cravings, particularly during specific daily routines such as after meals, during work breaks, or in moments of stress.

Traditional quit-smoking apps often focus on passive tracking features such as:

  • counting days since the last cigarette
  • calculating money saved
  • showing streak milestones

While these metrics can be motivating, they rarely help users in the critical moment when a craving actually occurs.

CigaFree was designed to solve this problem by focusing on real-time craving management and behavioural pattern awareness.

The Solution

CigaFree introduces a simple but powerful interaction model.

Instead of navigating complex menus, users are presented with two core actions on the home screen:

  • "I Need a Cigarette"
  • "I Just Had a Cigarette"

This approach allows the app to respond immediately to the user's current situation.

When a craving occurs, the app launches a short two-minute distraction activity designed to help the user ride out the urge. When a cigarette is logged, the app gathers insight into what triggered the behaviour.

Over time, these interactions allow CigaFree to build a behavioural model of the user's smoking patterns.

Key Features

Real-Time Craving Challenges

Most cravings last only a few minutes. CigaFree uses this principle to help users interrupt the automatic habit loop.

When the user taps "I Need a Cigarette", the app starts a 120-second distraction activity such as:

  • breathing exercises
  • mental puzzles
  • quick focus tasks
  • short educational reads
  • simple challenges

These activities are intentionally short, allowing the user to stay engaged until the craving naturally fades.

Behavioural Pattern Detection

CigaFree analyses smoking events and user responses to identify behavioural patterns.

The app can highlight insights such as:

  • common craving times during the day
  • the most difficult days of the week
  • common triggers such as stress or boredom
  • changes in smoking behaviour over time

These insights allow users to anticipate difficult moments and prepare for them.

Intelligent Risk Alerts

Based on historical behaviour, the app can identify periods where the user is most likely to experience cravings.

When the app is opened during one of these windows, users receive a gentle alert encouraging them to stay aware and take action if needed.

This predictive approach shifts the app from being reactive to proactive.

AI Coaching Support

CigaFree also includes an AI-powered coaching assistant that provides motivation, guidance, and encouragement during the quitting process.

The assistant can reference the user's behavioural patterns to provide more personalised suggestions and support.
